Japan is one of the easier countries to visit with children. It’s generally considered safe, the trains are punctual, and there’s something for every age. What takes planning is the logistics: train fares, car seats, and tickets that sell out. Here’s how to build a family trip, using the rules in force now.

A 10-day family route

  1. Days 1 to 4, Tokyo. Spread things out: one big activity per day, a park or playground to reset, and early nights while jet lag fades. See our Tokyo private tour guide.
  2. Days 5 to 7, Kyoto. Temples with space to run around, a hands-on activity such as a tea ceremony or a craft class, and a day trip to Nara. See our Kyoto private tour guide.
  3. Days 8 to 10, Osaka. Food, an aquarium and a theme park, then fly home from Kansai.

Resist adding a fourth base. Every hotel change costs a morning, and children tire quickly. For more ideas on how to pace a trip, see our luxury Japan itinerary.

Tokyo with kids: book the Ghibli Museum early

The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka is the one ticket families should plan around. The museum’s own ticket page says tickets go on sale at 10:00 on the 10th of each month for the following month, and they’re sold only through the Lawson Ticket website, not at the museum. Check the official page for how to buy from abroad, because the sign-up process asks for a phone number.

Trains: what children pay

On JR trains, including the Shinkansen, children under 6 travel free, and up to two small children can travel free with one adult if they don’t need a reserved seat. Children aged 6 to 11 pay half fare, but the cut-off is school grade, not birthdays: a child counts as a “child” from 1 April of the year they start elementary school. Junior high students pay adult fares. First-class Green Car seats aren’t half price. Reserve seats together on busy routes, and check the rules before you buy a rail pass.

Cars, taxis and child seats

Japanese law requires a child seat for children under 6 in a car. Taxis and buses are exempt, but rental cars are not, and rental companies usually let you reserve a seat in advance. If you plan to use taxis with a small child, bring a travel seat or booster if you want one. If you hire a private driver, ask for child seats when you book.

New in 2026: taxes and entry

  • Departure tax. The tax on leaving Japan rises from 1,000 to 3,000 yen for departures from 1 July 2026, and it’s added to your ticket. Children under 2 are exempt.
  • Visa. US citizens need no visa for a stay of less than 90 days.
  • JESTA. A Japanese online travel authorization for visa-free visitors is planned for fiscal 2028 but isn’t in force yet.
