Japan Tour Packages: Routes, Seasons and What to Check Before You Book (2026)
Comparing Japan tour packages? The classic Tokyo–Kyoto route and alternatives, cherry blossom and autumn timing, entry rules for US travelers and 2026 fee changes to know.
Japan is one of the easiest countries in Asia to travel in, and one of the hardest to plan well in peak seasons. A good tour package solves the real problems: hotel availability in Kyoto and Tokyo, rail logistics, and the right pace between cities. Here is how to compare Japan tour packages.
Routes that work
The classic: Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka (10 to 12 days)
The first-timer route: Tokyo’s districts and markets, Mount Fuji views around Hakone with a ryokan night, Kyoto’s temples and geisha districts, and Osaka for food. See our things to do in Kyoto guide.
Add the countryside (12 to 14 days)
Kanazawa and Takayama’s old towns, a stay in the Japanese Alps, or Hiroshima and Miyajima.
Beyond the Golden Route
Hokkaido for nature and food, Kyushu for hot springs and volcanoes, or Okinawa for beaches. A good package can combine two regions without too many transfers.
What a good Japan package includes
- Hotels in the right districts: staying close to a station saves time. Ask for at least one ryokan night.
- Rail and transfers: bullet train tickets or a pass compared with point-to-point fares; luggage forwarding between cities (takkyubin) is a quiet luxury that makes train days easy.
- Guides for key days: a guide helps most at Kyoto’s temples, Tokyo’s food districts and Hiroshima.
- Reservations: some experiences, such as tea ceremonies, kaiseki dinners and popular museums, need booking weeks ahead.
When to go
Cherry blossom season is spring’s headline: in 2026 the forecast put Tokyo’s full bloom around 27 March and Kyoto’s around 1 April, but blooms move by a week or more each year, so a good package builds in flexibility. Autumn leaves typically peak from mid-to-late November in Kyoto. Both seasons are crowded and hotels fill early; late spring and early autumn can be calmer. See our best time to visit Japan.
Entry and fees to know for 2026
- Visa: US citizens can visit Japan for short tourist stays without a visa. Check the current conditions on the official site; Japan has announced plans for a pre-travel authorization system (JESTA), so verify before you fly.
- Departure tax: raised from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per person on 1 July 2026 and normally added to your airline ticket.
- Visa fees: Japan raised visa fees from 1 July 2026, but these apply to travelers who need a visa, not to visa-exempt visitors.
- Local accommodation tax: some cities charge a small per-night tax at hotels; it is usually modest and paid at the property.
