Is Nepal Safe for American Tourists in 2026? What Changed and How to Travel
Is Nepal safe for Americans in 2026? The US advisory history after the 2025 protests, where things stand now, trekking rules, health and seasonal risks, and how to travel.

Yes, for most travelers Nepal is a safe place to visit in 2026, with the same care you’d take anywhere in the region. The country went through a hard few months in late 2025, and that’s why the question comes up so often now. Here’s what happened, what the US government says today, and the practical risks that matter more on most trips: altitude, roads, weather and health care outside Kathmandu.
What happened in 2025
In September 2025, large youth-led protests, often called the Gen Z protests, spread across Nepal, and the government fell. On 11 September 2025, the US State Department raised its travel advisory for Nepal to Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Nepal then held a general election in March 2026.
What the US advisory says now
On 31 March 2026, the State Department lowered Nepal to Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Its advisory says the nationwide demonstrations have stopped and the security situation is stable, but that demonstrations and local unrest can still happen, especially in cities. Level 2 is the same level the US gives many popular destinations. Check the current advisory on travel.state.gov before you go, and avoid any demonstrations you come across.
Visitors have come back, too. According to Nepali press reports, more than 100,000 foreign tourists arrived in May 2026, and 91,363 in June, up 19.5% on June the year before.
The risks that matter more on most trips
For most visitors, the bigger risks in Nepal aren’t political. They’re the mountains, the roads and the weather.
Altitude is the first one. Many treks and flights go high quickly, and altitude sickness can affect anyone, whatever their fitness. Build in acclimatization days and know the warning signs. Roads come second. Mountain roads are narrow and slow, and long drives are tiring. Domestic flights save time but are often delayed by weather, so leave a spare day before an international flight home.
The monsoon, from about June to September, brings floods and landslides that can close roads and trails. October to November and March to May are the main seasons for good reason. Our best time to visit Nepal page goes month by month. Medical care is good in Kathmandu’s better hospitals but limited elsewhere, so travel insurance that covers evacuation is important, especially if you’re trekking.
Trekking rules
Since 2023, foreign trekkers in most of Nepal’s national parks and conservation areas have had to hire a licensed guide and get their permits through a registered agency. Restricted areas, such as Upper Mustang, have their own permits and must be booked through an agency. Rules and enforcement vary by region and change from time to time, so check before you plan a trek. For anyone new to Nepal, a guide is a good idea anyway, for safety as much as for the route.
Kathmandu
Kathmandu is busy, chaotic and generally safe for visitors. Watch for pickpockets in crowded areas such as Thamel and around the big temples, use registered taxis or a private driver, and be careful crossing the road. Our guide to things to do in Kathmandu covers the Durbar Squares, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath.
Traveling with a US-based operator
A lot of people asking whether Nepal is safe really want to know who’ll help them if something goes wrong. Traveling privately with a US-based company means your guide and driver are arranged before you arrive, internal flights and transfers are booked for you, and there’s someone in your own time zone to call. Absolute Asia Tours is a US company that has planned private trips in Asia since 1989, including Nepal and Bhutan. We’re rated 4.8 out of 5 across about 900 traveler reviews.
