Autumn in South Korea: Fall Foliage Dates for 2026 and Where to See the Colors

When to see fall foliage in South Korea: the 2026 peak forecast for Seoraksan and Naejangsan, the best places for autumn colors, a 7-day route and entry rules.

October 2026South Korea

Autumn is South Korea’s best season. The air is clear and dry, the days are mild, and from late September to early November the mountains turn red and gold, starting in the north and the high peaks and working south. It’s also when Koreans head out to see the colors themselves, so good timing helps if you want the forests without the crowds. Here’s when the leaves peak in 2026, where to see them, and how to plan the trip.

When are the autumn colors in Korea?

The color moves from north to south and from the mountains down to the lowlands. According to the Korea Forest Service’s 2026 forecast map, published on 22 September, Seoraksan in the northeast was the first big park to color, with the peak expected around 20 October, and its oak forests a little later, around 25 October. Naejangsan in the southwest, one of the country’s most famous foliage spots, was expected to peak around 4 November.

In practice, that means the second half of October for the northern mountains, and late October into early November for the south and for city parks and palaces. If you’re planning for next year, the Forest Service publishes its forecast map in September.

Where to see the colors

Seoraksan National Park

The granite peaks and maple valleys of Seoraksan, near Sokcho on the east coast, are the classic autumn trip. A cable car runs up toward Gwongeumseong for views without a long hike, and the valley walks are easy. It gets very busy at weekends at the peak, so go on a weekday if you can.

Naejangsan National Park

In the southwest, Naejangsan is known for the red maples that arch over the road and the walk to Baegyangsa temple. It peaks later than Seoraksan, which makes it a good second stop as you move south. It pairs well with the hanok village in Jeonju. See our Jeonju guide.

Seoul’s palaces and parks

You don’t have to leave the city. The gardens of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, the ginkgo-lined streets near the palaces, and Namsan’s trails all turn gold. The secret garden at Changdeokgung, which you can only visit on a guided tour, is especially lovely in autumn. Our guide to things to do in Seoul has more.

Gyeongju

The old Silla capital in the southeast, with its royal tombs, Bulguksa temple and lakes, is beautiful when the leaves turn.

A 7-day autumn route

Days 1 to 3, Seoul, with the palaces and a day trip out to the hills. Day 4, drive east to Sokcho for Seoraksan. Day 5, Seoraksan, early in the day before the buses arrive. Day 6, the high-speed train south toward Jeonju or Gyeongju, depending on which way you’re heading. Day 7, Naejangsan or Gyeongju, then back to Seoul or on to Busan. If you have longer, add Jeju, where the silver grass on the volcanic hills is at its best in autumn. See our Jeju guide.

Before you go

US citizens don’t need a K-ETA (Korea’s electronic travel authorization) for a short tourist visit through 31 December 2026, because the exemption has been extended for that year. You still fill in Korea’s e-Arrival Card online before you land, unless you choose to apply for a K-ETA anyway. Pack layers: days are mild, but mornings in the mountains are cold by late October.

Autumn is a busy domestic travel season, especially at weekends and around Chuseok, the harvest holiday, which moves with the lunar calendar. Hotels near Seoraksan and Naejangsan fill up, so book early.

Planning it with Absolute Asia Tours
