The Essence of Phu Quoc Island
Our specialists find authentic ways to explore destinations in your trip, including top experiences in Phu Quoc Island with local guides.
Phu Quoc is an island in the Gulf of Thailand, closer to Cambodia than Vietnam. It features beautiful golden beaches surrounded by lush rainforests, colorful fishing boats, and peppercorn plantations.
Though the island is gaining popularity, it still offers secluded spots and boutique hotels recommended by our Vietnam experts. We regularly visit to stay updated on the best activities and accommodations to recommend based on your interests.
Originally part of Cambodia, Phu Quoc was claimed by Vietnam in 1979. Today, it is home to friendly Vietnamese fishermen and farmers who invite visitors to enjoy the relaxed island life.
For a glimpse into the island’s history, visit the Coi Nguon Museum in Duong Dong, which showcases local artifacts, including ceramics from shipwrecks. You can also check out the Phu Quoc Prison, a museum that tells the story of its use during the First Indochina War.
Most visitors come to unwind on the beaches, with Long Beach being the most developed, offering a mix of restaurants and beach bars while maintaining a chill vibe. For more privacy, consider exploring the quieter northern or western coves, or take a boat trip to the nearby An Thoi Islands.
A key local industry is nuoc mam, a strong fish sauce used in many dishes. You can visit a distillery in Duong Dong to see how it’s made, but we advise against buying it due to airline restrictions on its strong smell.
Phu Quoc is heavily forested, with more than half of the island being Phu Quoc National Park. This area features diverse ecosystems, including mangroves that create picturesque waterways where dugongs swim.
