Quick Overview: Taiwan tour packages compared: what to look for, three routes (7, 10 and 14 days), the Taroko Gorge status in 2026 and entry rules for US travelers.

Last Updated: ·Region: Taiwan

A good Taiwan tour package covers the island’s three highlights in 7 to 14 days: Taipei, the Taroko Gorge on the east coast, and the mountains of Sun Moon Lake and Alishan, with Tainan or Kaohsiung added on longer trips. The high-speed rail makes the west coast easy, but the east and the mountains need trains, drivers or a car. That’s where a package earns its place, so check what it includes between the cities.

What should a Taiwan tour package include?

Packages with the same name can be very different. Ask for these in writing, not a brochure line:

Ask about Why it helps
Transport between cities High-speed rail covers the west coast; the east coast and mountains need express trains, a driver or a bus
Guide hours Whether a guide is with you for full days or only for transfers and key sights
Hotel names and areas A hotel near the station saves time on rail days
Taroko arrangements Who checks the day’s road and trail status, and the backup plan
Free time Evenings for night markets, which are a main reason people come
What isn’t included Meals, tickets and tips, which vary by operator

Three Taiwan routes to compare

Length Route Best for
7 days Taipei (3 nights), Hualien and Taroko (2), back to Taipei First visit, shorter trips
10 days Taipei, Hualien, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, Tainan City, gorge and mountains
14 days Adds Kaohsiung, Kenting and the east coast through Taitung Travelers who like the countryside as much as cities

Our Taiwan itinerary guide gives the day-by-day detail for all three.

Taipei

Taipei 101 was officially classified as the world’s tallest building from its opening on 31 December 2004 until 2009, and it’s 508 meters tall. The National Palace Museum holds nearly 700,000 pieces, mostly relocated from the Beijing Palace Museum and other collections in mainland China. Night markets fill the evenings. Taroko Gorge, Sun Moon Lake and Alishan

Taroko is one of only three river-carved gorges in the world cut entirely through pure marble. The April 2024 earthquake near Hualien damaged roads and trails inside the park, and as of October 2026 the main road still runs with traffic control and set time windows, with some trails open and others closed. Confirm the day’s status before you go and ask who will check it. Sun Moon Lake is the largest body of water in Taiwan, 748 meters above sea level, with trails around the shore and Thao villages. Alishan is known for sunrise over the clouds and its forest railway.

Package or tailor-made?

A fixed package suits a first visit with a set budget and dates. A tailor-made private journey lets you change the order, add Kaohsiung or Kenting, or slow down after Taroko. Either way, a local guide who checks the day’s road and trail status on the east coast is a real help. Our sister company Taiwan Private Tours runs trips on the island.
