Luxury Asia Cruises: Mekong, Ha Long Bay, Indonesia and Ocean Voyages (2026 Guide)

Luxury cruises in Asia compared: Mekong river ships, Ha Long Bay overnight cruises, Indonesian phinisi yachts and ocean voyages, with when to go and book.

October 2026Asia Cruises

Luxury Asia cruises come in four kinds: small river ships on the Mekong, overnight cruises among the limestone islands of Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay, private-style phinisi yachts in Indonesia, and ocean voyages on luxury cruise lines between the region’s port cities. Each suits a different trip. River and bay cruises are best as part of a land journey, an Indonesian yacht is a trip in itself, and an ocean cruise works well with private tours before and after. Here is how they compare, which ships to know, and when to go and book.

Four kinds of luxury cruise in Asia

Type Where Length Guests Best for
River cruise Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia; upper Mekong in Laos 3 to 7 nights Usually under 70 Village life, temples and markets between Ho Chi Minh City and Angkor
Bay cruise Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, Vietnam 1 to 2 nights Small boats with a few dozen cabins at most Limestone scenery, kayaking and a night on the water within a Vietnam tour
Expedition yacht Komodo, Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands, Indonesia 3 to 7 nights A handful of cabins Snorkeling, diving, remote islands and wildlife
Ocean voyage Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan 7 to 20 nights Several hundred Several countries without changing hotel

The Mekong: Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos

The Mekong is Asia’s classic river cruise. Most luxury itineraries link the Mekong Delta in Vietnam with Phnom Penh and, depending on the water level, the Tonle Sap toward Siem Reap. Small ships stop at floating markets, silk and pottery villages, Buddhist pagodas and Phnom Penh’s royal palace, with guided excursions in small boats.

  • Aqua Mekong (Aqua Expeditions): a contemporary small ship with suites, a pool and expedition-style excursions.
  • Heritage Line’s Jayavarman: colonial-style design on the Vietnam and Cambodia route.
  • Heritage Line’s Anouvong: the upper Mekong in Laos, toward Luang Prabang.

Water levels shape the route. In the high-water months, roughly from August to December, ships can sail further toward Siem Reap; in the dry season the Siem Reap end of most itineraries is done by road. See our pages on Mekong river cruises and the best time for a Mekong cruise.

Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay

An overnight cruise among nearly 2,000 limestone islands is a highlight of any Vietnam trip. Luxury boats offer balcony cabins, cooking classes, kayaking into lagoons and early-morning tai chi on deck. Lan Ha Bay, next to Ha Long, is quieter and many of the best boats now sail there. Heritage Line’s Ylang and Violet and Orchid Cruises are among the boats our travelers enjoy. Choose two nights if you can: the second day reaches further from the busy routes. Indonesia by phinisi yacht

Indonesia’s traditional wooden sailing ships, rebuilt as luxury yachts, are the most exclusive way to cruise in Asia. Aqua Expeditions’ Aqua Blu sails Komodo, Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands, and Aman’s Amandira can be chartered privately. Days are spent snorkeling over coral reefs, walking with rangers to see Komodo dragons and landing on empty beaches. Seasons vary by region: Komodo is generally best in its dry season, roughly April to November, while Raja Ampat’s calmest seas are usually from about October to April.

Ocean voyages on luxury cruise lines

Luxury lines such as Silversea, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises sail Asian itineraries, mainly in the cooler, drier months from about November to April. Typical routes link Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Long Bay, Hong Kong and Japan. Ports are often far from city centers, so private guides and cars make each stop far more rewarding than a coach excursion, and a few days on land before or after the cruise lets you see what a single port day cannot.

How luxury cruises in Asia differ from regular cruises

  • Size: dozens of guests rather than thousands, so ships reach small rivers, bays and islands.
  • Space: suites and balcony cabins instead of inside cabins.
  • Excursions: small-group or private guided outings, often included.
  • Food: regional menus and chefs, with fewer set sittings.
  • Service: a high ratio of crew to guests, and expert guides on board.

What is typically included

On most luxury river, bay and yacht cruises in Asia, the fare includes your cabin, all meals, guided excursions and port fees, and often soft drinks and local beer or wine. Spa treatments, premium wines, gratuities and transfers vary by ship, so check each line’s terms. Ocean lines differ more widely, from all-inclusive fares to à la carte excursions.

When to book a luxury cruise in Asia

  • Peak season, roughly November to March, and holidays such as Christmas and Chinese New Year fill first. Book nine to twelve months ahead for suites on small ships.
  • Shoulder months often have more availability and fewer boats on the water.
  • Typhoon season in northern Vietnam, roughly July to September, can cancel bay sailings at short notice, so keep the rest of the itinerary flexible.

Combining a cruise with a private tour

A cruise is easiest as one chapter of a longer journey: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay before Hoi An; Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong and Angkor; or Bali before a week on a phinisi in Komodo. Absolute Asia Tours plans the cruise and the land journey together, with private transfers to and from the ship. Read our older overview of cruising in Southeast Asia, or plan your trip.

Luxury Asia cruises: FAQ

What are the top luxury cruise options available in Asia?

Mekong river cruises on ships such as Aqua Mekong and Heritage Line’s Jayavarman; overnight cruises in Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay; phinisi yachts in Indonesia such as Aqua Blu and Amandira; and ocean voyages with Silversea, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas or Oceania.

How do luxury cruises in Asia differ from regular cruises?

They carry far fewer guests, offer suites and balcony cabins, include guided excursions, reach small rivers and islands that big ships cannot, and have more crew per guest.

When is the best time to book a luxury cruise in Asia?

Nine to twelve months ahead for the November to March peak and holiday weeks, especially for suites on small ships. Shoulder months usually need less notice.

What amenities and services are included in luxury cruises in Asia?

Usually your cabin, all meals, guided excursions and port fees, and often soft drinks and local beer or wine. Spa treatments, premium drinks, gratuities and transfers depend on the ship.

When is the best time for a Mekong river cruise?

The cooler, drier months from about November to March are the most comfortable. In the high-water months ships can sail further toward Siem Reap; in the dry season that leg is usually by road.

Is a Ha Long Bay overnight cruise worth it?

Yes. The bay is at its most peaceful at sunset and dawn after the day boats leave. Two nights, or a boat that sails Lan Ha Bay, gets you further from the crowds.

Can I combine a cruise with a private tour of Asia?

Yes. Most of our travelers add a river or bay cruise to a land journey, with private guides and transfers before and after.

Seasons vary by region: Komodo is generally best in its dry season, roughly April to November, while Raja Ampat’s calmest seas are usually from about October to April.
