The story of the rock

Sigiriya lies in Matale district, near the town of Dambulla. The rock is about 180 meters high, with sheer sides, and it can be seen from miles away. According to the ancient chronicle Culavamsa, King Kashyapa chose it as his new capital in the years AD 477 to 495 and built a palace on the summit. He decorated its sides with painted frescoes and built a gateway in the form of a giant lion about halfway up. The name comes from that lion: Sinhagiri, “lion rock.” After the king’s death, the capital was abandoned, and the site served as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.

What you’ll see

  • The lion gate. Only the huge paws survive, and they’re enough to give a sense of scale. The archaeologist H.C.P. Bell wrote in 1898 about the effect the lion had on visitors.
  • The mirror wall. A polished wall beside the path that’s covered with graffiti written by visitors over the centuries.
  • The frescoes. The painted figures on the rock face are among the site’s best-known features.
  • The summit. The foundations of the palace on the flat top, with views over the forest.
  • The gardens and moats. At the foot of the rock, the water gardens were laid out with great care, with a system of underground water pressure, and some of it still works. The site is regarded as a well-preserved example of ancient urban planning.

The climb

The route up is by steps and stairways, so it takes some effort. Start early, when it’s cooler, bring water and a hat, and take your time. If you don’t like heights, you can see the gardens and the rock from below.
