Sri Lanka Travel Guide: Things to See, Safety, Trains and the Best Time to Go (2026)

The best things to see in Sri Lanka: Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle and safari, plus 2026 entry rules (ETA), current train line status, safety and the best season by coast.

October 2026Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary range into an island the size of Ireland: ancient rock fortresses, hill-country tea estates, one of the world’s most scenic train rides, golden beaches and leopard safaris. It is compact, friendly and good value. Here is how to plan it.

What Sri Lanka is known for

Tea, spices, elephants, leopards, Buddhist heritage and some of Asia’s friendliest people. The island has eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Sigiriya and the sacred city of Anuradhapura.

The best things to see

Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle

The 5th-century rock fortress of Sigiriya rises 200 meters from the jungle, with frescoes, mirror walls and ruined gardens at the top. Entry for foreign visitors is a significant expense (guides report roughly US$30 to US$35), but the climb is worth it. Add the cave temples at Dambulla and the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa.

Kandy

The hill capital, home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic and a scenic lake. In the evening, Kandyan dancers perform traditional dances.

The hill country: Ella and Nuwara Eliya

Tea estates, waterfalls, Little Adam’s Peak and hikes. The train from Kandy through the hills is legendary; see the note on train status below.

Galle and the south coast

Galle’s Dutch-era fort is a walled seaside town of boutiques and cafés. Nearby beaches such as Unawatuna, Mirissa and Tangalle offer swimming and whale watching.

Safari

Yala is the best-known park for leopards, but can be crowded; Udawalawe is quieter and excellent for elephants.

Trincomalee and the east

A harbor town on the northeast coast known for beaches such as Nilaveli and Uppuveli, and for diving and whale watching, at its best in the drier months of the east coast.

Colombo

The commercial capital, with colonial buildings, museums and good restaurants; most travelers spend a night or two at the start or end of a journey.

Entry rules (2026)

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is required before arrival, applied for on the official portal (eta.gov.lk). From 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka introduced a free 30-day tourist ETA for passport holders of 40 countries; check whether your passport qualifies and what the current fee is. Your passport should be valid for at least six months, and you may be asked for onward travel and proof of funds.

Is Sri Lanka safe?

The main tourist route through the south and center (Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Ella, Sigiriya) is considered a normal-caution destination in 2026. The north and east have higher cautions: stay on marked paths because of leftover landmines in some areas, and check current advisories. Take usual precautions in crowds.

Train travel: check before you go

Flood damage in late 2025 closed parts of the hill-country railway. As of mid-2026 reports, the Ella–Nanu Oya–Badulla section had reopened in June, while Kandy–Nanu Oya was still closed for repairs. The coastal line from Colombo to Galle runs normally. Because status changes, we confirm train sections when we plan your trip and arrange scenic drives where needed.

When to go

  • West and south coasts and the hill country: December to March.
  • East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay): May to September.
  • Yala safari: drier months, when animals gather at waterholes.
