History of the hill station
The town came from a French survey: in 1897 the colonial government began studying the highland minorities, and in the winter of 1903 an Indochina geographic service team found the site’s scenery. The town was founded in 1905 when the French judged it ideal for a resort. The name Sa Pa is a local rendering of a Mandarin term meaning sandbar, and the French wrote it Chapa. Today Sa Pa is a ward in Lao Cai province, known for its terraced rice fields and for Fansipan, called the roof of Indochina. Hmong place names such as Lao Chai and Ta Giang Phinh remain around it.
