Kuala Terengganu is a city of contrasts on the east coast of Malaysia, with modern prosperity derived from oil wealth rubbing shoulders with an ancient traditional lifestyle. It’s a great base for the coastal exploration of Malaysia, and home to a couple of our favourite resorts – especially the fabulous Tanjong Jara Resort.
Taken in hand by its ruling sultan, the city has skilfully developed in such a way as to preserve its slow pace of life and integrity as a cultural centre. Stroll around its streets and you’ll quickly realise this is a city that is proud of its identity. It has the excellent Terengganu State Museum, reputedly one of the best in the region, and its lively Central Market is a hive of sounds and colour where you can purchase gorgeous hand-woven songket cloth.
Leave the city and the scenery transforms as the lush rainforest descends into jewel-like waterfalls and meandering rivers. Here you will sense a wildness in the heart of Terengganu.
