Ayutthaya: Thailand’s Ancient Capital
Ayutthaya was the largest city in the world in the 17th century and the capital of the Siam Kingdom for over 400 years. It was located where three rivers meet. In 1767, the Burmese destroyed the city, leaving behind ruins of temples and statues. Today, you can still see these old structures.
Ayutthaya was also a center for trade and welcomed merchants from many countries. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins are being covered by lucky jujube tree roots. The area is lively, with Buddha statues in saffron robes and monks giving blessings.
Some main sites to visit are:
- Wat Mahathat: Known for a Buddha head surrounded by tree roots.
- Wat Phra Si Sanphet: Has three chedis for past kings.
- Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon: Features a tall tower.
To explore Ayutthaya, you can rent a colorful Kermit tuk-tuk or join a bike tour. It’s only a two-hour drive or train ride from Bangkok, and you can also take a boat cruise starting at Bang Pa In, the summer palace.
Ayutthaya is a great place to discover Thailand’s rich history!
