Private Journeys in Malacca
The Essence of Malacca
Experience the rich history and vibrant culture of Malacca, Malaysia. Wander UNESCO-listed streets, sample local cuisine, and explore lively night markets.
For centuries the crossroad of cultures. Malacca (Melaka) is a port city on the Straits of Malacca a couple of hours from Kuala Lumpur. Malacca is a great way to experience history, culture, and food. It’s worth a visit.
A City Influenced by Trade and Empire
Malacca was founded in 1400 by a Sumatran prince named Parameswara, and became popular among Chinese, Indian and Arab traders very quickly. With all of these traders Malacca developed a unique identity that has been influenced by many cultures and societies – the Portuguese, Dutch and British left their imprint on this city. Malacca is a true plot twist of culture and architecture you will never forget.
What to See and Do in Malacca
Walk the Historic Core
The old-town area of Malacca has been recognized by UNESCO and the area is filled with grand mosques, pagoda-roofed temples, colonial churches, and shophouses in faded-pastel shades. The area is small enough to walk through, or you can hop on one of the famous and colorful trishaws covered in flowers and stuffed animals that all play various styles of music through loud soundsystems.
Visit the Stadthuys
Stadthuys, the iconic bold-red building of Malacca, was once the Dutch colonial town hall. Now it houses a museum detailing the extensive history of Malacca. Its elaborate doors and louvered windows are quintessential examples of Dutch architecture.
Visit Jonker Walk Night Market
On weekend nights, Chinatown’s Jonker Walk transforms into one of the most lively night markets you’ll see on earth. Eat local specialties such as barbecued quail eggs or fresh watermelon juice to accompany your browsing through seldom ending stalls selling everything from plastic souvenirs to fashionable street culture items. Trishaws flash brightly and illuminate the night off their battery power with music and neon lights, creating joyous moments for everyone.
Visit Kampung Chetti
Northwest of Chinatown is Kampung Chetti. This area is home to the Chetti people, descendants of Indian traders and local Malays, who fascinate and delight visitors. The village is a riot of color, especially during Hindu festivals, when it bursts into life with painted buildings and traditional temples.
When to Visit
Malacca is hot with average daytime temperatures hovering around 85°F (30°C) and somewhat humid throughout the year. The heaviest rain, though usually for a brief time, falls in June and November rain which may offer a welcome break from the heat.
How to Get There
Malacca is a two-hour easy drive south of Kuala Lumpur, or seventy minutes from the international airport.
Malacca is a good place to think about for a weekend getaway location when the markets are arulling.
