Private Journeys in Shaxi
The Essence of Shaxi
Explore Shaxi, a tranquil village on the historic tea-horse route, where traditional Pumi culture thrives and market days bring vibrant local life.
The village of Shaxi is renowned as a vital stop along the historic ‘tea-horse’ route—ancient trade paths that carried caravans of pu’er tea from southern Yunnan to Tibet, Nepal, Myanmar, and other regions of China.
Today, Shaxi remains remarkably untouched by mass tourism, welcoming surprisingly few visitors. Its pristine preservation offers a rare glimpse into a China of the past.
On market day, Fridays, you’ll often see local Pumi women dressed in vibrant traditional attire, adding to the village’s authentic and timeless charm.
