Private Journeys in Thimphu

The Essence of Thimphu

Thimphu blends ancient tradition with modern life. Visit sacred monasteries, local markets, and towering Buddhas in Bhutan’s captivating capital city.

Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan and has an interesting mix of old and new. Monks in crimson robes stroll by trendy cafés and singular boutique shops. Traditional wooden homes are right next to modern apartment buildings. It has no traffic lights; only a graceful white-gloved officer motioning for cars to proceed. It is one of the most unique cities I have ever been!

Thimphu only became the official capital in 1961 and it has kept growing while retaining its spiritual heart. Set in a broad valley walled by lush green hills and snow-topped peaks it is culturally rich and stunningly beautiful.

Things to do

  • National Memorial Chorten: A spiritual center where the local community gathers every morning to pray and socialize.
  • Archery Ground: Where you can witness Bhutan’s national sport and observe traditional singing, dancing and colourful dresses.
  • Gangankh Lhakhang: A hilltop monastery where babies are blessed and prayer flags are distributed by the resident monk/astrologer.
  • Tashichho Dzong: Both the seat of government in Bhutan and an important monastic stronghold.
  • Buddha Dordenma: A golden statue that is 51 meters tall, with 125,000 golden Buddhas within it, and fantastic views of the valley below.
  • Weekend Market: A vibrant riverside market selling fresh produce, yak cheeses, handicrafts, and many treats.

As calm as Thimphu is, global disturbances are quietly unfolding. It is the ideal base camp for travelers trying to navigate the balance of Bhutan’s spiritual past and progressive future.
