The Golden Triangle is the classic first route through northern India. It links three cities, Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, which form a rough triangle on the map, each about a half-day drive from the next. Between them they have the Taj Mahal, a fort-palace on a hill, a walled pink city and several Mughal monuments, which is why most first visits to India start here.

Delhi

Delhi is India’s capital and usually the arrival point. Two Mughal monuments are the ones to see. The Red Fort was begun in 1638, when the emperor Shah Jahan founded his new capital, Shahjahanabad, and was completed in 1648. It was the main residence of the Mughal emperors for about two centuries, and UNESCO listed it in 2007. The prime minister raises the national flag there every year on Independence Day, 15 August.

Humayun’s Tomb, listed by UNESCO in 1993, is the earlier of the two. It’s the first garden tomb of the charbagh (four-part garden) type in the Indian subcontinent and the first large building in red sandstone on that scale, and it set the pattern that the Taj Mahal later followed. If you like the Taj, seeing Humayun’s Tomb first gives you the story of how it developed.

Agra

The Taj Mahal is a tomb that the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It took about 22 years and was finished around 1648. Ustad Ahmad Lahori is often named as the chief designer. UNESCO listed it in 1983. Its architecture combines Persian, Turkish, Indian and Islamic elements, and its white marble looks different at different times of day. It’s closed to general visitors on Fridays, so plan your days around that, and check current opening hours and ticketing rules before you go.

Agra Fort is also worth a visit, but most travelers spend one night in Agra and focus on the Taj at sunrise.

Jaipur

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of nearby Amber. The city was planned in nine blocks, and the main buildings were finished in about four years. It’s called the Pink City, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage city in July 2019. Just outside it, Amer Fort, a hilltop fort-palace, was listed by UNESCO in 2013 as one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. How many days

Allow at least five days for a comfortable pace: two in Delhi, one in Agra and two in Jaipur. Seven days lets you add a pause between the cities. Road distances between each city are roughly 230 to 280 kilometers, which is a half day on the road, so plan a morning departure and sights in the afternoon.

When to go

The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the most comfortable for sightseeing. The hot season, from about April to June, is very hot in all three cities, and the monsoon follows. In winter, morning fog and haze can affect views of the Taj Mahal, so keep a day of slack in the schedule. See our India travel guides and India tours.
