Best Time to Visit Guilin: Li River, Yangshuo and the Longji Rice Terraces by Season

The best time to visit Guilin and Yangshuo, month by month: when the Li River cruise is at its best, the rainy season, and when the Longji rice terraces turn gold.

October 2026China
Guilin

The best time to visit Guilin is September to October, when the summer rain has passed, the Li River is still full, and the Longji rice terraces turn gold. Spring, from late March to May, is a close second, green and misty, with the paddies being flooded. Summer is hot and wet, and winter is cool and often grey but quiet. Here’s what each season is like in Guilin, Yangshuo and the terraces, and how to time a visit.

Guilin and the Li River by season

September to October: the best time

The heavy rain is over, days are warm and clearer, and the river is usually high enough for the full cruise from Guilin down to Yangshuo. It’s the most reliable time for the karst views. Avoid the national Golden Week holiday, 1 to 7 October, when the river, the boats and Yangshuo’s streets are packed.

November to February: quiet and cool

Fewer visitors, cooler days and often a soft mist over the peaks, which some photographers love. Water levels drop in the dry months, and in very dry spells the larger cruise boats on the main stretch of the Li River have been suspended while the bamboo rafts kept running. If you’re traveling in winter, check how your river trip will run before you book.

March to May: green and misty

Spring brings fresh green to the hills and rice fields, and the river rises. Rain becomes more frequent from April, but you’ll still get plenty of good days, and the landscape looks its most like a Chinese painting.

June to August: the rainy season

The rainy season runs roughly from April to July, with the heaviest rain in May and June, and summer is hot and humid. Heavy downpours can raise the rivers quickly. In June 2026, rain across Guangxi raised the river levels and Li River bamboo rafts were suspended for safety. If you travel in summer, keep a flexible day for the river.

The Longji rice terraces by season

The Longji terraces, about two hours north of Guilin, change completely through the year. Around June, the terraces are flooded and reflect the sky like mirrors. In summer they’re green. From late September to mid-October, the rice ripens and the hillsides turn gold, the most photographed time of year, and harvest begins in late October. In winter the terraces are bare and sometimes frosted.

Ping’an village, with its classic views, is the gentler choice for families and older travelers. The Jinkeng area, with the Dazhai Yao village, has the dramatic “ladders to heaven” views and a cable car up to the viewpoints. More on our Longji page.

How many days in Guilin?

Three or four nights is ideal. Spend one day on the Li River, two in Yangshuo for the countryside, a bike ride or a bamboo raft on the Yulong River, and add a day for the Longji terraces. See our pages on Guilin and Yangshuo.

Guilin fits well into a two-week China trip after Beijing and Xi’an, before finishing in Shanghai or Hong Kong. Our luxury China itinerary shows how.
