This comprehensive introduction to the Philippines features rolling green mountains, pristine beaches, and rich historical and cultural legacies. Begin your journey at the capital and gateway city of Manila where you will explore the country's colonial past. Drive through the eerie landscape of Pampanga, buried in volcanic ash and lahar (volcanic mud) by the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991. Proceed to the mountains of Banaue where you will stay for two nights. From here behold the majestic, hand-built Banaue Rice Terraces. Over 2,000 years old and rising more than a mile up the mountain, the terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are fondly referred to by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Another drive will take you to Sagada, a tranquil mountain town famous for its caves and 'hanging coffins'. Continue on to Baguio, the summer capital of the country. Rest and relax in this lovely mountain city for several days. Fly to Manila for a connecting flight to Zamboanga del Sur, the City of Flowers, located in the southern island of Mindanao and home to the country's Muslim population. Spend a day visiting nearby fishing villages. After two nights, fly to Cebu, the Queen City of the South, where you will spend three leisurely nights. Cebu is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Visayan Islands, which are famous for their fabulous beaches. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the country's uniquely Asian Catholic way of life here.
