Phum Baitang Resort, Siem Reap: a must-visit luxury eco-friendly village
Phum Baitang is the top luxury resort in Siem Reap and one of the best hotels in Cambodia. It is located in a peaceful rural setting providing an escape from the hustle and bustle of the main thoroughfares, but is a mere fifteen minutes by tuk-tuk to the Angkor ruins, Old Market, and airport. Phum Baitang has tuk-tuk and car services available for guest travel to and from the resort.
Designed by a Parisian company, when you arrive at Phum Baitang, you realize you are in the middle of a traditional Cambodian village. The property boasts 45 frangipani trees on an 8 acre rice property, interspersed with rustic pavilions. Its rustic style is imported and found throughout the resort, so each guest experiences typical Cambodian traditional living. All the structures, including the lobby, pools, and restaurant are connected by a walkway bringing ease and also a view of the rice farm. The rice is harvested three times a year, and as a farewell gift, the guests are given the rice to take home.
The entire resort is designed rustic luxury, and utilizes traditional, natural elements, like wood, rattan and bamboo. Of the guest area, it has 45 wooden villla’s built on stilts, with one or two bedrooms; some have private covered terrace’s for peaceful seating, while other rooms have plunge pools. I had a terrace villa with a kingsize bed, and sitting area, and large bathroom with a freestanding tub and rain shower.
Phum Baitang has an infinity pool overlooking a rice paddy and a saltwater swimming pool with loungers. The pool bar also serves light meals and juices. There are two restaurants on property – Bay Phsar, which focus’s on Cambodian flavors, and Hang Bay, which is more international.
The centerpiece of the hotel is a preserved 100 year old farmhouse which has been restored into a cocktail and cigar bar with a cozy atmosphere. Guests can enjoy cocktails or fine wines with extraordinary sunset scenery.
When you want to unwind, the Temple Spa provides an array of treatments including traditional Khmer therapies and massages set in a relaxing environment. The Temple Spa has treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room, area for relaxation, and a yoga pavilion.
